This week, make your reserve easier to use. A useful inventory allows to know what is available, where to find it and what needs to be renewed. It does not need to be complicated or contain all the private information of the home.

Start with a limited area

Choose a shelf or category: water, food, lighting or hygiene. Check the contents and clean the space without blocking a passage or removing sensitive products in unsuitable conditions. Medicines must remain in their storage conditions.

Spot damaged packaging, leaks, moisture and unidentified products. Follow proper disposal instructions rather than putting a questionable item back on the reserve. Also check the stability and load of the shelves.

Choose some useful information

For each product, write down the name, quantity, location, and date or next relevant control. For a device, add the necessary battery type, cable or part. Keep the records accessible.

Element Quantity Location Next action
Drinking water Volume really present Identified area Check rotation and containers
Food Portions or units Shelf indicated Consume according to dates and instructions
Lighting Assistive devices Known point Test batteries or recharge
Hygiene Needs of the Home Separate storage Completing the consumables

A notebook, a sheet or a spreadsheet may be suitable. If the list is digital, keep a usable copy without a connection. Limit sensitive data and protect medical or financial information separately.

Ranger according to use and rotation

Group the items used together, without mixing food and household products. Place the products to be used first in front, while keeping their dates and notices visible. A tray can organize closed packaging; check its format and load.

Label the storage in a legible way. If transferring a food, preserve the allergens, batch and instructions. A new storage date does not extend its conservation.

Update over time

Choose a simple rule: write down a consumption when you take an item and add it to the next shopping list if necessary. Set a realistic threshold for important products. Avoid automatically buying back an item that no longer meets a need.

A periodic review and after a family change allows to correct the list. For devices, do a functional test; the presence on the inventory does not demonstrate that they work.

Share useful access

Another person in the household must be able to find the essential resources. Do a little spotting exercise with the list. If a storage is only understood by its author, simplify the names and locations.
