This week, look at the characteristics of a fallback location. This can be the home of a loved one, temporary accommodation or another authorized place. Buying an isolated property is not a condition of preparation and does not guarantee safety.
Define the need before the place
What event would make the accommodation unavailable? How many people and animals should be welcomed, for what probable duration and with what needs? Distinct one night after a local incident from an extended trip out of the area.
Confirm the host’s agreement and plan an alternative. Check out how to get in touch, access the venues and share the fees. An address on a card does not constitute a confirmed welcome.
Examining local risks
Consult municipal information and relevant official maps: flood, forest fire, road access, weather and other risks of the sector. A more rural location may have other vulnerabilities, including increased distance to care or single access.
Avoid looking for a place that is supposedly safe. Compare the benefits, limitations and ways to compensate for them. Neighbourhood and local services can be important resources; population density does not sum up security.
Check the essential functions
Confirm potable water, sanitary, sleeping, heating or cooling adapted, food and communications. Check accessibility and medical needs. A well or stream does not guarantee consumable water and a reserve of wood does not guarantee usable heating.
Ask what works during a breakdown and what depends on a pump, network or fuel. Don’t rely on a facility that no one knows how to maintain.
Preparing the route and documents
Provide several realistic travel options. Respect the routes and closures announced at the event. Secondary roads are not automatically safer or passable in winter. Keep a useful map and contact information offline.
A pouch can collect the necessary copies at the beginning. Check the format and closure, while keeping a useful copy in another place.
Evaluating a property without a hasty decision
If you are actually considering a purchase or long-term rental, have zoning, permits, legal access, water, sanitation, insurance, building condition and maintenance costs checked. Agricultural uses, livestock or energy installations may be limited.
The future production of a garden or livestock requires time and skills. Do not count it as an available resource immediately. A real estate project commits the budget well beyond a preparation equipment and deserves the appropriate professional audits.
