Take into account reactions, abilities and living conditions to build a preparation that can be used by each person.
Reactions are not commanded.
A threatening situation can cause various reactions: agitation, hesitation, difficulty concentrating or immobility. They do not allow to judge the courage of a person. The effects of stress vary depending on context, experience and many individual factors.
We must avoid universal percentages of people who freeze and rigid chronologies of the brain. Rather, preparation seeks to simplify actions, make information accessible and provide concrete assistance.
Making actions easier
A brief plan, accessible objects and an advertised practice limit the difficulties that can be corrected before the event. Show how to use the material and check for actual obstacles: weight, lighting, stairs, reading or language.
Practice does not guarantee a perfect reaction. It must be proportionate and safe. Do not use surprise, fear or deprivation of basic needs as a method of family preparation.
Understanding the constraints of home
Income, housing, transportation, treatment and access to information may limit preparedness. Ask people about their needs and abilities rather than infer a vulnerability from their age or origin.
Provide with their agreement the contacts, the modalities of assistance and the alternatives. Health data should not be placed on a public neighbourhood list. A mutual support network is helpful when it respects people and its own limitations.
Accompanying children
Present simple and reassuring gestures, adapted to age and understanding. A child can locate the meeting point or participate in the verification of a lamp, without being in charge of deciding on an evacuation alone.
Listen to the questions and adjust the exercise if a person is in trouble. A preparation doesn’t suppress emotions; it gives cues and the ability to ask for help.
After the event
The resumption of services does not mean that everyone has recovered. Gradually restore possible routines and identify available supports. Persistent or worrying symptoms justify a request for professional help.
Take a no-brainer when people can participate. Correct the obstacles observed and acknowledge the contributions. People and their needs remain the starting point for the next plan.
