Every year, many articles discuss sunscreen for children, their hydration and supervising summer activities. What about summer safety guidance for adults?

Adults also enjoy getting outdoors in summer, weekend activities, swimming and exercise. Whether planning a short weekend break or a longer holiday, these summer safety checks are for you.

1) Drink water

Plan access to safe water and drink regularly according to your needs, considering heat and activity. Hydration does not replace breaks and a cool place. Someone with a fluid restriction or a health condition should seek tailored advice rather than indiscriminately increasing intake.

How much water should you drink each day?

Needs cannot be reduced to the same minimum of 1.5–2 litres for every adult. Food and other sources of fluid also count, while exertion, weather and health change needs. For a trip, plan replenishment options and a reserve suited to the route rather than a personal prescription drawn from one number.

The “body weight × 30 mL” formula cited in the source is not a universal rule for daily consumption. It cannot alone assess an individual, intense heat or prolonged exertion. The calculation can be explained without presenting it as medical guidance:

For 70 kg, 70 × 30 mL gives 2,100 mL, or 2.1 litres—not exactly two litres. That arithmetic result does not validate the intake required by that person.

Adjust a planning volume to conditions and needs, with advice if necessary. Do not confuse drinking quantities with all the water needed for food preparation and hygiene during a stay. An advertised water point may be unavailable or unsafe; check before departure and plan an alternative.

Water intake needs to account for the environment and activity level. Heat or activity may increase the amount you need to drink. Beer and other alcoholic drinks are not a substitute for water.

Urine colour can be one indication among others, but it varies with foods, medications and health conditions. Pale colour does not always prove sufficient hydration, while darker colour does not dictate a set amount to drink without context. Consider overall condition and seek advice for symptoms; confusion, severe illness or another serious sign requires urgent assistance.

Dehydration and heat-related illness are not merely minor inconveniences: they can be fatal.

2) Protect your skin from the sun

This article is not about tanning, but safety and well-being. For summer safety and clothing, that means covering up.

Sun protection combines shade, clothing, a hat and eye protection with suitable sunscreen. The following practical guidance is rephrased rather than reproducing an unverified quotation from the source:

Wear covering clothing and a broad-brimmed hat suited to the activity, and choose sunglasses labelled for UVA and UVB protection. Price or dark lenses alone do not demonstrate that protection.

Choose broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30, follow label quantities and reapplication instructions, particularly after swimming or sweating. Sunscreen does not permit unlimited exposure.

Sunburn can interrupt your plans, so take steps to prevent it.

3) Check evacuation supplies

Summer can bring heat, thunderstorms, tornadoes or fires depending on the location. They do not all call for leaving the home: an imminent tornado particularly requires appropriate shelter. Check hazard-specific instructions and prepare to leave when evacuation is indicated.

Review the bag for activities and conditions without removing every warm layer: nights, rain or another accommodation may remain cool. Repellent, sunscreen and suitable clothing have their own instructions and limits. A damp towel may provide comfort but does not treat heatstroke or replace a cool location and assistance. Keep necessary treatments accessible under their required storage conditions. The changing-seasons guide helps review these arrangements.

The following list recalls four functions; it is not exhaustive and must not exceed carrying abilities. Documents, treatments, communications and particular needs may also be essential. Plan weight, accommodation and necessary assistance rather than automatically adding quantities whenever space remains.

  • Water
  • Food
  • First aid kit
  • Torch

4) Review the evacuation plan

A departure plan fits alongside contacts, treatments and household needs. If none exists, start with a possible destination and someone to contact, then develop it progressively. Blaming someone who lacks time or resources is unhelpful; seeking appropriate assistance is also part of a plan.

If you have a plan, review whether it needs updating. Have routes changed? Are roads closed or new bridges open? Have you reconsidered where to go in an emergency? Has someone in the family changed workplaces?

Make necessary updates, discuss the changes and practise with your family.

5) Review outdoor safety

Before an outing, review the route, weather, closures, abilities and a way to raise the alarm. Wilderness first aid training may help without automatically qualifying you for advanced interventions. Inform a contact of the route and expected schedule, allow a margin and cancel if conditions exceed abilities.

6) Update the medical kit

Some injuries can occur at any time, but others are more likely during summer: bee and insect stings, ticks, dehydration, poison ivy exposure and sunburn.

Consider the following for a summer medical kit:

  • Medication for a mild reaction only according to a pharmacist’s advice, age and circumstances. Diphenhydramine can cause drowsiness; no brand is a universal recommendation. An antihistamine does not replace treatment for anaphylaxis.
  • A prescribed epinephrine auto-injector, an action plan and knowledge of its use. Severe allergy is not limited to bees; check expiry and storage, then follow the plan and call emergency services for a serious reaction.
  • A soothing product suited to the skin and situation, without treating aloe vera as a remedy for every burn. Extensive injury, substantial blistering or general symptoms may require advice.

  • An anti-itch product if appropriate, following instructions and a pharmacist’s advice; avoid masking a serious reaction or infection needing assessment.
  • A suitable tick-removal tool or fine-tipped tweezers: Quebec guidance accepts both. A spoon-style tool is not superior in every case. Remove promptly according to instructions, record the place and date and seek follow-up advice, without burning or coating the tick.

  • A rehydration solution or suitable product if recommended, mixed at its exact dilution. A sports electrolyte powder does not automatically treat dehydration or heatstroke. For serious signs, call for assistance and cool the person according to instructions without forcing a confused person to drink.
