In the city, a power outage, storm or evacuation can quickly disrupt transportation and services. Preparing is about knowing the local risks and organizing the needs of the home before the break.
This guide proposes five practical axes: deciding on the trip, avoiding dangerous exposures, discreetly organizing your equipment, preventing conflicts and verifying information. They adapt to your neighborhood and your mobility.
Follow these tips to improve your chances of navigating safely through the unique challenges of urban survival.
Top 5 Tips on Urban Survival
Strategy 1 - Prepare for departure and follow instructions
Bridges, tunnels and main roads can be congested or closed during an emergency. Prepare several possibilities of destination and transport. Evacuation is not always the appropriate measure: shelter may be requested depending on the hazard.
To facilitate an organized decision and departure :
- Prepare your evacuation bag in advance, make sure it is complete, at hand and ready to be taken away instantly.
- Coordinate with your family or evacuation group. Everyone must know the plan, the rallying point and the steps to follow.
- Follow alerts and directions from authorities; don’t wait to see neighbors leave when an evacuation order concerns you. In the face of immediate danger, be safe and contact emergency services.
The goal is to leave at the appropriate time with an authorized itinerary and an accessible destination. Speed and being “among the first” does not guarantee safety.
Urban Survival Strategy N°2: Environmental Risk Prevention
Debris, damaged buildings, dust and smoke can present different hazards. Stay away from disaster areas, respect perimeters and do not enter a damaged building to recover equipment.
Closed shoes, appropriate clothing and some protective equipment can reduce limited exposures. They do not allow you to cross a toxic or burning area or freely handle unknown debris.
- Eye protection - choose glasses that are suitable for the intended use. They do not make exposure to splashes or chemicals safe.
- Hearing protection - useful for certain sound exposures, to be chosen according to the context. Preserve your ability to hear alarms, vehicles, and directions while on the move.
- Respiratory protection - an anti-particle filter, even class FFP3, does not protect against all gases and vapours and does not provide oxygen. The choice and fit of a device depends on the hazard; do not rely on a bag mask to pass through fumes or an unknown atmosphere.
- Protection of the hands - suitable gloves reduce certain risks of cutting. They do not make electrical wires, contaminated objects or unstable debris safe. Avoid these dangers and report them.
The first protection is the avoidance of exposure. Do not use the presence of equipment in your bag as a reason to enter a prohibited area or perform a technical rescue.

Simple equipment may be suitable for ordinary travel. It does not make anyone invisible and does not make it possible to predict the behavior of others. Give priority to comfort, access to essentials and a respectful attitude.
- Integration - choose a practical outfit adapted to the season. Avoid accessories that interfere with movement, visibility, or communication.
- Privacy – Protect your documents, contact information and valuables without assuming that the people around you are hostile.
Here’s how to adopt a discreet posture while remaining fully prepared :
- Neutral clothing: Choose simple, good quality clothing, avoid military motifs or any equipment that is too tactical that could make you stand out.
- Organization of material - store valuables and documents in closed compartments. Keep essentials accessible to avoid emptying the entire bag in a crowded place.
- Interactions - stay polite and keep a comfortable distance. No isolated visual behavior can identify a threat with certainty.
- Tools - store them protected and choose only those that correspond to a legitimate and permitted use in the places crossed. Keep the lighting and the means of alert available.
Discreet preparation should not prevent you from asking for help or reporting a need to stakeholders. Being able to be identified and found by your loved ones or help can be essential.
Strategy 4 - Preventing Conflict and Seeking Help
An emergency can create uncertainty and tension. Plan for travel with your loved ones, avoid confrontations, and head to a safe place or an identified reception point when you need help.
- Coordinated travel - agree on a rhythm and a regrouping point, taking into account children and limitations. A group does not guarantee the absence of danger; everyone must know the plan.
- Alerting methods – keep the phone and useful contact information accessible. Don’t brandish a weapon or tool to deter others: it can make a situation worse. In the face of an immediate threat, walk away if possible and call 911.
- Proportionate attention - observe the concrete dangers, closures and instructions. If an interaction becomes worrisome, gain a frequented place or a point of help without provoking or prosecuting the person.
Preventing conflict is based on distance, calm communication and appropriate help. Citizen preparedness includes cooperation with neighbours and stakeholders.
Strategy 5 - Check the information and adapt the plan
The “99% Unprepared” and “1% Prepared” rates cited in the previous version were not documented. Your preparation is judged by verifiable actions: a known plan, a kit maintained and adapted exercises.
- Use your plan as a starting point. Adjust it to the closures, directions, weather and current capabilities of the home; do not continue a journey that has become dangerous by fidelity to the initial scenario.
- A less traveled road is not necessarily safer. Make sure it is open and accessible; respect detours and checkpoints. Do not bypass a security perimeter.
- A sense of discomfort can cause you to distance yourself and check the situation. Intuition does not replace an official alert or reliable information about the danger.
Cross out the messages and distinguish the facts from the rumors. Avoid spreading unconfirmed information that could unnecessarily displace other people.
The best route depends on the actual danger and up-to-date instructions. Identify in advance where to consult municipal information and how to find your loved ones if networks are disrupted.
Putting These Urban Survival Tricks into Practice
Put these five axes into practice: spot local alerts, check the bag, note contacts and test a simple start. Correct the observed difficulties instead of looking for supposedly universal equipment.
What do you think of these tips? Have they awakened new ideas in you or recalled principles that you already apply? Urban survival is a vast and complex subject, and each contribution can enrich the conversation and help others prepare.
After an exercise, discuss the difficulties and improve the family plan. Share verified advice with your loved ones, respecting their privacy and abilities.
