Understand the warning channels and prepare the gestures of the home before receiving a instruction.
Quebec On Alert and Local Channels
Québec En Alert broadcasts messages on compatible phones as well as on radio and television. Mobile reception is based on cellular broadcasting, without prior registration, and requires a compatible device connected to the LTE or 5G network.
The reception area depends on the selected towers; it does not correspond to an exact location of each phone. Check with the vendor for compatibility and model settings. A phone that is turned off or not connected is not a reliable way to receive.
Municipal citizen alert services and MétéoCAN complete the information. They do not all have the same scope or the same registration methods. Locate those that relate to your address and keep multiple channels.
In France, a separate system
FR-Alert transmits information and instructions to people present in a relevant area, without application or prior registration. It complements other means, including sirens and media. The technical and sound conditions differ from those in Canada: do not automatically transpose the parameters from one system to another.
Read the entire message
- What danger and sector are affected?
- What action is required: departure, shelter, removal or other instructions?
- Where can I find additional official information and updates?
- Who, in the home, needs help to apply the instruction?
Treat the alert seriously and check for updates through official channels. Don’t call 911 to ask if the message is true. Difficulty in accessing information should not delay immediate protection.
Evacuation and sheltering are not interchangeable
For an evacuation, follow the routes and directions of reception, without delaying the departure for objects. Decisions about gas and electricity depend on directions and the ability to act safely; do not systematically cut them off.
For sheltering from hazardous materials, apply the instructions on openings and ventilation. An instruction given for an event does not become a rule for all hazards. The protocols of the school and other institutions must also be respected.
For a seismic alert or shaking, the protective gestures are immediate: lower, shelter and grip. Early warning detects an earthquake that has started; it does not guarantee a delay in exiting the building.
Preparing the home before the message
Note the contacts, an external contact, the meeting solutions and the transport constraints. Prepare documents, medications according to the pharmacist’s instructions and accessible essential needs.
A battery-powered radio can track local stations if they are available. Check the reception and power supply; no channel should be presented as infallible. Brief messages can make it easier for people to hear from each other when networks are running.
Test the plan safely
Take advantage of the trials announced and check the official information on their schedule. Do not assume that each test is national, mandatory or received by all devices.
Do an advertised family exercise: read a clearly identified fictitious instruction, choose the action and identify the necessary help. Children must be accompanied according to their age; preparation does not consist in entrusting them alone with a safety decision.
