A confrontation can arise in a queue, on public transport or along a familiar route. The civilian goal is to reduce exposure, reach a safe place and obtain help. Leaving safely matters more than winning a chase or proving that you can outsmart someone.

Distinguishing a malaise from an immediate danger

Unusual closeness, unpleasant speech or an impression of being observed do not, in themselves, determine an intention. Look at the useful facts: passage blocked, threat formulated, contact imposed, exit available. If a danger appears immediate, prioritize your safety and calling the local emergency number rather than a prolonged scan.

Avoid provoking a reaction to test your suspicions. A person who responds calmly is not necessarily safe, and a restless person is not automatically hostile. You have the right to put a distance and ask for help without making a diagnosis on the other yourself.

Prepare several departure options

On your usual journeys, find the open places where help can be requested: trade, reception of a building or staff of a transport. An option should be available when you use it; a closed address in the evening is not a reliable relay. Avoid considering a private lot or locked access as an available exit.

Also prepare a solution if your phone, payment method or usual transport is missing. The goal is to reach a known destination, not to improvise a succession of detours. Give a trusted person the information you need to understand your journey and what to do if you can’t communicate.

Moving according to your abilities

Physical preparation can make it easier to walk and carry a bag, but it should not become an obligation to run or cross obstacles. Test the journeys with the people concerned, the ordinary shoes and the technical aids used. A slope, a crowd or a staircase can completely change an option that seemed simple on a map.

Reduce the weight of objects that interfere with movement. Keep essentials accessible without long searching. If you have children accompanying you, plan a grouping point and a simple sentence to ask them to follow you. An announced exercise, without simulated opponent or surprise, allows to check the understanding without creating a new endangerment.

Observe the conditions of the place

Lighting, noise, weather and traffic influence the ability to ask for help and get around. Use this observation to choose a passable passage, not to mask a leak. An isolated ride can seem faster while making assistance more difficult.

When entering a public place, look at the signage and staff instructions. An emergency exit is not necessarily a normal travel route; its use depends on the situation. During an evacuation, follow the applicable instructions and do not block the progress to recover property.

Communicate without prolonging the conflict

A short sentence may suffice: “I prefer to stop this exchange” or “I will ask for help”. Avoid insults, challenges and endless explanations. You don’t have to convince the person to be able to walk away when it can be done safely.

If you ask for help, describe your location, the facts observed and the people who need assistance. Details about an outfit or direction can be helpful; interpretations about a personality are less so. Then follow the instructions received. Do not pursue someone to complete your description.

After the incident

Join a place where you can take stock, check for possible injuries and contact your loved ones. Write down what you remember without supplementing the blanks with guesses. If steps are necessary, use the relevant services and keep the relevant elements without widely spreading them online.

Then go back to the plan: which option was really open, which number was missing, which obstacle had not been anticipated? A concrete correction, such as confirming a welcome or preparing a means of emergency communication, is worth more than a promise to never be surprised.

A useful exercise for the home

Choose a frequent trip and ask everyone to show where they would seek help, how they would communicate their location and what solution they would use if the trip was interrupted. Check the answers on the spot, and then keep the essential information in an accessible format. This work develops real possibilities without organizing a pursuit or training confrontation.
