A request for help or information may be sincere, awkward or deceptive. Preparedness means checking what is needed and protecting household information without inventing a cover story. This approach is useful during a power outage, a disrupted journey or an ordinary interaction.

Recognise a request to be considered

A well-presented title, uniform or message is not enough to confirm an identity. A request that becomes urgent, changes the subject or seeks information unrelated to the service deserves an audit. None of these elements alone proves fraud; they indicate that the situation must be clarified before transmitting anything.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security and its public resources recommend verifying suspicious requests through another channel. Use the official contact information that you know or search for independently, rather than those contained in the message that is causing doubt.

Understanding the mechanisms without reproducing them

A pretext can combine an appearance of authority, information already known, a seemingly limited demand and an objective that will only be revealed afterwards. A question about the neighborhood can thus drift towards the presence of occupants or the location of equipment. It is not necessary to identify the exact technique to ask why this information is useful.

Kind exchanges, a similarity of vocabulary or a service offered do not create an obligation to disclose information. You can thank, ask a question and keep a limit. Do not try to manipulate the interlocutor in return: this complicates the exchange without improving the verification.

Limit the information exposed

Prepare a distinction between what a speaker really needs to know and what remains personal. An address may be essential for getting help. It doesn’t have to be given to any stranger who asks where you live. The situation, the function checked and the channel used determine the appropriate level of information.

The appearance of the bag, documents left visible, online publications and public conversations can also expose information. Store sensitive documents and avoid making absences from the home public. This discretion does not require camouflage or false affiliation.

Prepare honest and short answers

A limited response can be direct: “Why is this information needed? ", "I'll check with the department" or "I'd rather not share this information here". Do not replace private data with a false address or the identity of a third party.

For a trip, prepare the necessary real information: destination, contact, documents required and assistance needs. If a formal procedure applies, seek to understand it and meet its requirements. An invented story can create additional difficulties and is not a civilian preparation resource.

Adapting the communication channel

Face to face, keep the possibility to ask for a precision and join a known welcome. By phone or message, check the recipient before submitting a document. Through a loved one, specify exactly what can be shared to avoid unintended disclosure.

A communication by radio or on a collective space must not be presumed confidential. Limit information as needed at the time and choose another way for sensitive details. For an appointment or organized help, arrange the contact and location in advance rather than improvise them in the middle of a public conversation.

Maintain a margin of decision

When the situation allows, take the time to check out of the exchange pressure. This does not mean that any emergency is artificial: an immediate danger sometimes requires action without delay. Distinguish the safety of people from a payment, code or document requirement presented as urgent.

If the interaction becomes threatening, seek appropriate help and prioritize your safety. Do not prolong the discussion to get proof of deception. After the event, keep the useful messages without posting them to everyone, and then use the relevant services to report the situation.

Do an exercise without cheating on loved ones

Choose three fictitious and announced requests: a delivery, assistance related to a breakdown and a message about an account. For each, identify the information requested, the reason given and an independent means of verification. Success is measured by clarity of questions and limitations, not the ability to lie confidently.
