A personal distress beacon, or PLB, is used to transmit a serious alert through the Cospas-Sarsat international system. It can complete the preparation of a hike, a nautical outing or an isolated trip. It is neither a life insurance nor the guarantee that a team will be able to intervene quickly.

Choose it from the activity, the coding country, the possible maintenance and how you can reach it. A device purchased at the right price but impossible to register properly or have maintained is not a good solution.

Understanding the 406 MHz Alert

A PLB is usually activated manually in case of severe distress. It emits an identifier on 406 MHz and, depending on the model and conditions, a position obtained by navigation satellite. A radio-guided signal can help equipped teams during the approach. The visibility of the sky, the position of the antenna and the obstacles influence the operation.

The transmission is relayed to the competent bodies. The registry, mission control centre and coordination centres have distinct roles. The signal is not direct communication with a neighbor and does not broadcast an alert to the surrounding population.

The Cospas-Sarsat distress service does not require a monthly fee for a PLB. However, there are still costs for the purchase, maintenance and replacement of batteries. The costs of a transaction and the insurance must be examined separately.

Screen, RLS and conversation: three different things

A screen can display the status of the device without receiving feedback from the system. The Return Link Service, or RLS, provides on compatible models a confirmation related to the receipt of the alert. It does not allow a conversation and does not indicate when help will arrive.

An inReach or ZOLEO communicator is another way of working: messaging and SOS by satellite service, with active subscription required for the functions concerned. The fact that it has an SOS button does not make it a 406 MHz PLB.

Coding and recording before use

The Canadian Centre for Mission Control explains the Canadian registry and the differences between beacon categories. Registration of PLBs is encouraged, while regulatory obligations are specified for ELTs and EPIRBs. Do not automatically transpose the rule from one category to all others.

In practice, save your beacon before using it and keep your contacts up to date. Confirm the country-specific coding, approvals, and procedure with the relevant vendor and registry. An offer scheduled for the United States must not be presumed ready for a Canadian or French registration.

For a used or foreign purchase, also check the release of the old registration, the change in ownership, the battery date and the possibility of recoding by an authorized service. Do not activate a real alert to check these points.

Compare models and their versions

The ResQLink 400 It is an option without a screen. Compare the reference for your country and the functions actually included. A weight or battery data taken from another generation is not enough to qualify an advertisement.

The PLB-425 View It has a screen. The PLB-435 View RLS add the Return Link Service. Do not confuse the View name with an RLS confirmation and compare the functions of the exact model before purchase.

The choice of a screen must take into account its legibility and your ability to understand the indications. It does not replace learning how to activate or control the battery.

Ocean Signal rescueME PLB1

The PLB1 It is distinguished by its format. The standard version does not float alone; a buoyancy pouch does not automatically hold the beacon in its operating position. Check the regional version, fixation and package leaflet. In nautical use, buoyancy and correct operation in water are two different issues.

McMurdo FastFind 220

For a FastFind 220, confirm the reference, documentation, coding and availability of a service center. The presence of an advertisement or an old brochure does not prove that the current offer is suitable and that the battery can be maintained locally. These elements must be established before retaining a seller.

Garmin inReach Mini 2: a messaging alternative

The InReach Mini 2 Manual Please note that an active subscription is required for satellite functions, including SOS. Its interface and text capabilities meet a need other than a PLB alert alone. It does not automatically replace a regulatory beacon required for an activity.

Criteria that matter on the ground

CriteriaControl before the choice
Activity and countryEncoding, approvals and requirements specific to the activity
AccessAbility to reach and use the device with the worn equipment
EnvironmentTemperature limits, immersion, fixation and operating position
MaintenanceBattery date and authorized center accessible
FunctionsScreen, RLS, test and location signal confirmed for exact model

An emission self-sufficiency figure is not a promise that relief will arrive within that time frame. Also keep clothing, shelter, water and signage suitable for a potentially long wait.

Wear, fasten and learn

Choose a compatible mount and an accessible location if you are separated from the vehicle or bag. Try it with the clothes and gloves used, without activating a real alert. A manual beacon cannot be assumed to trigger if its wearer is unconscious; other members of the group need to know its presence and usage.

For a lifejacket, follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the lifejacket and beacon. An improvised fixation can interfere with inflation, antenna or access. Ask for validation for the precise set.

Care according to the instructions

Stick to the self-test schedule and its limitations. More frequent than expected tests may consume the battery; a full test and a positioning test are not necessarily identical. Do not generalize a monthly frequency to all models.

Replace the battery on the specified date or after emergency use as instructed. Do not open a sealed box for home repair. Also check for attachment, accessible joints, labels, and damage after an exit.

Preparing loved ones and waiting

Entrust the itinerary, the number of people, the date of return and the conduct to keep in case of delay to a reliable contact. Notify him that a coordination center can call him and check his contact information in the registry. A PLB does not replace this plan.

In case of real distress, apply the instructions of the device and rescue. Look for a safe position before any transmission improvements. In case of accidental triggering, notify the competent body immediately and follow the procedure; do not assume that a stoppage of the housing is sufficient to cancel a search.

The right choice is a beacon adapted, registered, maintained and usable by your group. No commercial classification replaces these verifications.
