The tables and controls below reproduce information reported in the historical review. Check the instructions for your exact model before use. The original manual located at a distributor could not be independently retrieved for this revision, so these details should not be treated as newly verified manufacturer specifications.

This review concerns the historic Baton Pro 18650 battery, separate from the Baton 3 Pro and later versions. The observations and measurements reported are from the test preserved with his photographs; no new physical tests have been carried out for this adaptation.

Let’s check out the pros and cons of this new generation Olight Baton model Pro.

Unpacking and First Impressions

Here is what you can see in the light:

  • The threads and O-rings were slightly lubricated. The wires were smooth and clean (no feeling of sand).
  • The side electronic switch requires firm and deliberate pressure to activate and helps prevent unwanted light activation.
  • The blue clip comes pre-installed in the factory.
  • The clip is not reversible. However, the two-way clip allows for decent pocket porting (no deep pocket porting option) with side porting.
  • Magnetic tail cap can support the Weight light when it is fixed horizontally and vertically (upside down) to a flat ferrous metal surface.
  • The light anodization is uniform, with no missing specifications, as predicted by Olight.
  • The included strap is supplied with a very useful thin metal to facilitate its insertion into the hole of the strap.
  • The lanyard is able to withstand all the weight of light and must stand the test of time.
  • No case is provided, but a nice pouch to hold the light and a magnetic charging cable is included.
  • For power and charging, follow the instructions for the exact model and use the authorized references. A similar size or capacity does not guarantee electrical compatibility, protection or magnetic charge.
  • For power and charging, follow the instructions for the exact model and use the authorized references. A similar size or capacity does not guarantee electrical compatibility, protection or magnetic charge.
  • Scan the QR code with your Phone / tablet on the side of the box would display the product page Olight Baton Pro.

Note:

  • Before using the flashlight for the first time, remove the Film Insulating the battery tube.
  • The battery is inserted into the battery tube with the positive (+) end first.

UI (User Interface)

The user interface for this light is good for the daily port (EDC) because its use is rather simple.

Switching on and off is done by the side electronic switch located on theLightingSo no momentary activation is possible.

Normal operation

From OFF:

  • 1 click - The last level of brightness (all modes except TURBO & STROBE are only memorized) is activated.
  • 2 Click - Direct access to TURBO; 1 Click to disable or hold down to change mode.
  • 3 (or more) Click - Direct access to STROBE; 1 Click to disable or hold down to switch mode.
  • HOLD ( approximately 1 sec) - Direct access to "MOONLIGHT".

From:

  • 1 Click - The light will go out.
  • 2 Click - Direct access to TURBO; 1 Click to disable or hold down to change mode.
  • 3 (or more) Click - Direct access to STROBE; 1 Click to turn off or hold to change mode.
  • HOLD - Mode change (light only switches to LOW, MID & HIGH; MOONLIGHT & TURBO is not part of the sequence).

Note:

  • TURBO mode is stored as HIGH mode.
  • If the memorized mode is HIGH mode, after 2 clicks to enter TURBO mode - 2 additional clicks cause the light to return to MID mode instead of the previous mode (HIGH).
  • There is a flashing mode for this light (STROBE only) and no SOS mode.

Timer configuration

There are 2 types of timers: short (3 min) and long (9 min). The light will turn off once the timer is finished.

From:

  • 2 Click & HOLD - 1 blink indicates that the short timer (3 min) is enabled. Repeat 2 Click and hold the button to activate the long timer (9 min) - 2 blinks.

Power indicator

There is only one type of power indicator for this flashlight.

Starting from ON (in all modes except ‘MOONLIGHT’), the side switch LED will glow in one of the following colors:

  • GREEN - Power is greater than 70%.
  • YELLOW - The power is between 15% and 70%.
  • RED - Power is less than 15%, recharge or replace batteries.

Electronic locking

From OFF:

  • HOLD (until MOONLIGHT is turned on and off) - LOCKOUT mode is turned on; HOLD (until MOONLIGHT is turned on) - LOCKOUT is turned off.

When the electronic locking mode is activated, any pressing of a button causes the RED LED to be activated on the switch key for about 3 seconds.

Form factor

For flashlights intended to be used daily (EDC) and possibly for a long time, the form factor is extremely important.

This light is well balanced and is found in a medium-sized hand (without head or heavy tail). Switching between the method of maintaining pronation and imbalance is easy with its form factor and weight.

Embossed knurling makes the light extremely "sticky" (as on the Olight S1R Baton II and  Olight S2R Baton II ), even with wet gloves/hands but without being too aggressive (i.e. the fabric is soft for pockets).

The new 8-circle design helps to provide better grip on the head area, which is especially useful when unscrewing the head in case of a battery change or mechanical locking.

Even with the strap attached, it is able to stand perfectly without the slightest wobbling.

Charging process

With the supplied magnetic charging cable, the battery was charging at about 0.85A.

The report describes the behavior during the load. For actual use, follow the instructions, monitor charging conditions and do not deduct permission for any battery or cable from this observation.

The full RED indicator on the TAIL part of the MCC charger indicates the current load.
The fixed GREEN indicator in the TAIL part of the MCC charger indicates that the charging is complete.

Note: Charging does not disable the electronic locking mode.

Beam Style / Beamshots

For this light, the discharge, crown and hot spot are relatively predictable due to the TIR optics (total internal reflection) used. The LED is fully covered by Clear TIR optics (with a slight icing in the center). Therefore, the beam has both a "projection" and a soft flood to recognize nearby elements.

The beam profile above is an approximate interpretation of what one sees when aiming at the white wall.

The beam has a large circular hot spot with a slight crown and a large spill (most of the beam produced is focused in the hot spot). There are beam artifacts in the beam when viewed on the white wall, but they are not visible in the real world.

The historical photographs use the following reported camera settings: MOONLIGHT: 2 sec, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB; LOW: 0.6 sec, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB; MID: 1/4 sec, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB; HIGH: 1/6 sec, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB; TURBO: 1/15 sec, F3.5, ISO100, 5000K WB. The source reports slight image adjustments to approximate visual perception and a light-to-door distance of 4.6 m.

Mode spacing (Output)

In the report, the spacing of modes is appreciated from the point of view of use and autonomy expected. This is an observation of the source, not a measurement of the remaining battery or a test performed here.

We were rather surprised that Olight is removing a true MOONLIGHT mode below 1 lumen in the flagship Baton Pro model. The 5 lumen “MOONLIGHT” mode is too bright for nighttime events at bedtime or with accustomed eyes at night, but is suitable for other close-up tasks in daily use.

In addition, the HIGH mode (600 lumens) could use a slightly lower power, 400-500 lumens for example, to extend the operating time - the difference in efficiency being almost imperceptible for most eyes.

Hue and CRI

The hue and color rendering were visually estimated in the test. These are not certified color measurements; photographs, settings, and the screen influence the perceived result.

However, there are color shifts on the entire beam profile. The hot spot is a cool white hue while the crown has a slight yellowish green hue; and the spill has a slight purple hue.
This is still slightly noticeable in real life.

Sealing

The immersion protocol described in the source is a one-time test, not a certification or an invitation to reproduce thermal shocks. Respect the limits of the manufacturer’s instructions and the actual condition of the joints.

No signs of water intrusion into the head, switch or body were seen.

Locking capacity

Electronic locking and mechanical locking are possible when needed, such as when carrying in a bag.

A quarter turn (in the counter-clockwise direction of a Watch) of the rear part of the light will allow mechanical LOCKING.

For electronic locking, see above “Electronic Locking”, for how to enable and disable the lock.

Scale comparison (rule)

In conclusion

To choose a lamp of this type, compare access to modes, low level, charging, carrying and the cost of replacing consumables. The historic verdict does not prove that this model is still available or preferable to current options.

Simple user interface with direct access to "MOONLIGHT", OFF TURBO & STROBE, maximum power (2,000 lumens) of the Baton series, powerful magnet in the cap, 8 "circles" alveoli on the head and possibility of magnetic charging cable points more for this flashlight.

The lowest level, the recharge and the orders are points to check on the exact copy. The conclusion of the historical review should not be read as a promise on current ranges.

Here is a comparison of the size of the bonuses with the Olight Seeker 2.

Transparency of the historical review: The record indicates that the copy was provided by Olight and no further compensation was received. This statement describes the context of the source and not a new trade agreement.
