A pleasant conversation can lead to sharing more than expected: hours of absence, children’s habits, access to a building or professional information. Protecting this information is about choosing what is communicated, to whom and for what reason. It is possible to remain courteous while setting a clear limit.

Recognize a request for information

Not all personal matters are malicious. The context counts: a discussion between neighbors, a request from a known organization and an unexpected call do not imply the same expectations. Consider above all the nature of the information requested and its usefulness in the situation.

A solicitation can take the form of a compliment followed by a specific question, a rumor that you are invited to correct or an alleged common relationship. These procedures alone do not prove fraud. They become a concern when the person insists, asks for a secret, or searches for data they don’t need.

Avoid certainties derived from body language. A fleeting look, hesitation or nervousness do not determine the intention of an interlocutor. Support your decisions on demand and verifiable items.

Define in advance the information to be protected

In the home, agree on a few simple limits: do not publicly announce an extended absence, do not communicate access codes, and check requests regarding children. Relatives must be able to apply these limits without having to improvise a justification.

At work or in an association, identify the information that is requesting an authorized channel. An informal conversation does not remove confidentiality obligations. It may be better to direct a request to the person responsible than to give a partial answer.

For preparation situations, share only what is needed for mutual aid. A neighbor may need a number and a locker to pick up your news; they don’t need inventory of your reserves or medical details of all members of the household.

Respond without entering into a confrontation

Prepare short phrases: “I prefer to keep this information private”, “I will check with the person concerned” or “Can you submit an official request? ». A limit does not require prolonged debate.

If the person invokes a common knowledge, check directly with that knowledge by a means already known. Do not confirm details just to show that you know the subject well. You can correct general information without providing sensitive data.

Temporal pressure deserves special attention. When an unexpected request requires immediate action, take the time to verify identity and contact information. Legitimate organizations have means of contact that you can search for independently.

Distinguish between trust and proof

Knowing a name, an address or a professional detail does not prove that the interlocutor is authorized to ask for more. Some information is public or has already been circulated. Check the role of the person and the purpose of their request.

A uniform, a logo in a message or a social network profile are not enough. For an administrative or financial request, use a site and number obtained by your own means. Avoid recalling only the number provided in the suspicious message.

React if information has been shared

Start by establishing the facts: what data, to whom, when and by what channel? Keep the messages useful. If a password or access has been compromised, use the official service to secure the account and notify the person responsible. A bank information or an identity document calls for an appropriate approach with the organization concerned.

In a professional context, quickly follow the internal reporting procedure. Delaying a declaration by embarrassment can complicate the protection of people. Describe what has been transmitted without inventing the intentions of the interlocutor.

Your next action: Set three pieces of information that your home keeps private and a sentence to refuse to share. Do the same exercise with children in an age-appropriate manner, without making them bear responsibility for adult safety.
